Sunday Best #14: The Bestival Podcast – part two

The Trojan SoundsystemAfter a blinding set in the Big Top on Sunday afternoon, the Trojan Soundsystem joined the aquatic airwaves of Bestival Radio for an hour of blissful, sunshine, reggae fun. Selectors Earl Gateshead and Daddy Ad were joined by Chucky Banton and Super Four on MC duties.

Trojan Soundsystem formed in 2004 from London Sound System legends, to represent the label in England and across the globe. Earl Gateshead began Djing in Brixton in 1979, worked as selector and MC with Cutty Ranks, Big Youth, Dr Alimantado, and Dennis Alcapone. Earl is a London legend – well known for his twenty year residency at The Dive Bar in London’s Chinatown and his Saturday residency at the legendary Blue Note club. Daddy Ad comes from the Roots and Reality Soundsystem and has worked with Gregory Isaacs, Tappa Zukie and Anthony Gunshot Johnson. The Sound Systems vocalists (Brother Culture, Superfour, Chucky Banton) all have twenty years experience as members of the great South London Sound Systems, Twelve Tribes, Taurus, Jah Revelation, Sir Coxsone and Saxon. They have been chosen as the absolute cream of London’s reggae entertainers. Special TSS guests have included Lee Perry, Dr Alimantado, Tippa Irie, Dennis Alcapone, Horace Andy and Gregory Isaacs.

Sunday Best #13: The Bestival Podcast – part one

Hello and welcome to the first Bestival podcast of 2007 – Join the Bestival FM team as they scoot about the Robin Hill site reporting on the gala opening, enjoy the company of northern tent erectors and marvel at Captain Disco’s costume description and the sound of lobsters on stilts at the fancy dress parade to beat all others.

Not only that; we have audio treats, recorded in the Bestival FM engine room, from Emmy The Great whose stripped-down acoustic songs live up to her name and Joe Driscoll’s one man band version of the Roots has to be heard to be believed. Finally we join The Metros for some big choruses in a new wave style, live from the BBC Introducing stage.

Crikey me! If that doesn’t get your Bestival itch scratched – I don’t know what will. Remember to come back for more podcast action featuring exclusive tracks and Bestival FM highlights from Candie Payne, XX Teens, Trojan Soundsystem, Beardy Man and much, much more – re-live the Bestival mayhem or get your whistle wetted for Bestival 2008!! Sunday Best #11

As we enter the season of Bestival, Rob presents a pre-festival podcast with six minutes more than the usual 30 minutes of excellence, featuring tracks from Bob Dylan, The Go Team and Fear of Theydon, and joined in the studio by special guest and new label signing Alice McLauglin who plays a beautiful acoustic set.

NB: We at SundayBestpodcast.com are sorry about the fabled missing podcast, which vanished mysteriously beneath the huge inland sea which recently swamped Britain, soaking many and causing a rush on the sale of dinghies. However, we will be compensating you, faithful Sunday Best podcast listeners, with a more-than-usual series of Bestival audio delights, so remember to subscribe and watch this space…

Sunday Best #9

Rob da Bank flaunts all the rules of broadcast in a breathless style as he leaves the studio at a run, and only just makes it time to prevent the parking attendant giving him a ticket. An even more wonderfully eclectical mix than usual, which includes a random street meeting with Paul Weller, not in Jamaica.

Sunday Best #8

After a week off for good behaviour, here’s another 30 minute superb-sounding plethora of grooviness from Rob da Bank, including Johnny Flynn, The Lovers, a great track by someone rumoured to be Richard “Aphex Twin” James, the hugely energetic and sweaty Miss Odd Kidd, and a selection of wonderful covers that any self-respecting music lover would dream beneath any night of the week.

As always, your emails are welcome: rob@sundaybestpodcast.com, or leave a comment. They all get read, you know…

Sunday Best #7

Rob da Bank provides an unusually eclectic and varied selection (even for him!) which should cheer up your very rainy British Bank Holiday, or indeed any day. A choir of crickets, The Royal British Legion, UNKLE, and Grand National in session combine to form 30 minutes of the best-sounding MP3 podcast in the podosphere.

Sunday Best #6: Bestival Special

Podcast number 6 sparkles like light on water and shimmers like an early summer haze, with music from Frankie Valley, Hot Chip, Milk Can featuring Dolly Parton, Transglobalunderground and an acoustic session from The Hat, plus crucial information about the Bestival Festival, imparted in Rob’s own unique Thai Sangria-inspired rhyme scheme.

Sunday Best #5

All on his lonesome this week, Rob does a great job of filling 30 minutes with several unsigned corkers including the new track from the celebrated Dan le Sac vs Scroobius Pip, and a cracking tune from the ex-Sunday Best teaboy. The usual eclectic high standards we’ve come to expect, all served up for free at excellently good 192 MP3 audio quality. Surely the Sunday Best Podcast is one of the best-sounding podcasts in the world?
